Background of the Study
Intergenerational storytelling has long been a cornerstone of Yoruba cultural heritage, serving as a medium for transmitting historical narratives, moral lessons, and linguistic forms from elders to youth (Adebayo, 2023). This oral tradition not only preserves the language but also embeds cultural values and social norms within the narrative structure. With the advent of digital media, traditional storytelling faces both challenges and opportunities for preservation. Studies (Ogunleye, 2024) indicate that while modern influences may dilute traditional forms, intergenerational storytelling remains a powerful tool for maintaining historical language forms. In Yoruba communities, storytelling practices provide insights into archaic vocabulary, syntactic structures, and pragmatic expressions that are rarely captured in formal education. By documenting and analyzing these narratives, researchers can reconstruct aspects of historical Yoruba language use and assess the effectiveness of storytelling in language preservation (Chinwe, 2025). This study examines how intergenerational storytelling contributes to the retention of historical language forms and cultural identity in Yoruba communities.
Statement of the Problem
Although intergenerational storytelling plays a vital role in preserving historical Yoruba language forms, its impact has not been thoroughly documented. Modernization and digital communication threaten the continuity of these oral traditions, leading to potential language erosion (Adebayo, 2023). Existing research often focuses on contemporary language use, neglecting the preservation potential inherent in traditional storytelling. This gap limits our understanding of how effectively storytelling practices conserve archaic vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic markers. Without systematic study, valuable linguistic heritage may be lost, undermining cultural identity and historical continuity (Ogunleye, 2024). Addressing this gap is essential for developing strategies to integrate traditional storytelling into modern language preservation initiatives.
